Spirulina: What is it?

Spirulina defined » A microscopic blue-green algae in the shape of a spiral coil (hence the name), that is found in both ocean and fresh waters. It is a simple one -celled organism, and is similar in some ways to seaweed. Because of its incredibly high and complete nutritional properties, it is valued and utilized as a dietary supplement (and a prime ingredient in Superfood Protein Smoothie!).

Total Immune & Body Support

Spirulina is often considered one of the most complete food supplements from a nutritional perspective. It contains a rich supply of many vital nutrients, including protein, complex carbohydrates, iron, and vitamins A, K, and B complex. Moreover it contains ample levels of antioxidants such as beta carotene, and is also an abundant source of chlorophyll, fatty acids, and essential lipids. As such, spirulina can be considered a superior resource for boosting overall health, preventing disease and maintaining general well-being.

Spirulina is a phenomenal immune system booster, possessing ample amounts of key nutrients for the immune system such as protein, zinc, selenium and B vitamins. Indeed, research has shown that spirulina supplementation may help boost the immune system by increasing immune cell activity. Moreover, supplementation with spirulina has been shown to help inhibit inflammatory responses in the body, thereby making it a superior resource for immune boosting and overall disease prevention.

Spirulina is also an ideal anti-aging food; concentrated with high nutrient value, easily digested and loaded with antioxidants. It contains many vital nutrients for overall well-being such as Beta carotene, good for healthy eyes and vision and in a form ten times more concentrated than carrots. Spirulina is also rich in iron, magnesium and trace minerals, in forms easier to absorb than many mineral supplements. Also importantly, Spirulina is one of the highest sources of B-12, essential for healthy nerves and tissue and particularly important for plant-based lifestyles.

Additionally, spirulina stimulates beneficial flora like lactobacillus and bifidobacteria in your digestive tract to promote healthy digestion and proper bowel function. It acts as a natural cleanser by eliminating mercury and other deadly toxins commonly ingested by the body. As such, spirulina supplementation can be incredibly beneficial from a total body, support and health perspective.

An Athlete’s Perspective

Supplementation is a key component in most athletic regimens to promote sustained performance and activity. From an athletic perspective, Spirulina is a prime supplement in that it has been shown to help boost stamina, promote overall recovery, as well as enhance immune response and fight fatigue during increased training. Its high protein content is beneficial to building and maintain muscle mass. Simultaneously, spirulina can help curb hunger that may develop during the most demanding training routines.
Thus, it indirectly acts as an effective way to maintain an athlete’s ideal body weight, helping to maintain muscle mass and supporting recovery during prolonged training (along with a balanced diet).

The Skinny

It would seem a no-brainer why many dietary routines, particularly plant-based lifestyles, incorporate spirulina as a key component in their ingredient profile. With it’s comprehensive spectrum of nutritional benefits – from immune boosting to anti-aging – spirulina is very much a “super” food in and of itself. However, when incorporated into a well-balanced supplement or dietary regimen, it can only enhance the advantages to overall health and general well-being.
